"The Pipe on the Hob (2)" (in Gaelic An Píopa ar an mBaic), also known as "The Lonely
Lad", “Paddy Canny's Jig" or "The Portroe Jig" is an Irish double jig in
D Major (McNulty), D Mixolydian (Banalari) or D Mixolydian/Major (most versions).
The parts are played AAB (Breathnach, Laufman) or AABB’ (Harker/Rafferty, Mallinson,
McNulty, Mulvihill). This is different from the A Dorian tune of the same name
in this collection, (also found in O'Neill) which besides being in a different key,
has 3 parts.
It was printed in
Banalari's Celtic Encyclopedia (1999).
Breathnach's CRÉ I (1963),
Cotter's Traditional Irish Tin Whistle Tutor (1989),
Harker's 300 Tunes from Mike Rafferty (2005),
Laufman's OK Ladies and Gentlemen (1973),
